Austrians of the heart' is the name given to a group of the Albanian population that has left a special mark on the common history of Albania and Austria. These are the descendants of predominantly Austrian women who came to Albania in the interwar period, mostly by marriage, and subsequently stayed here.
The fates that befell the descendants of Austrian emigrants are numerous, moving and often tragic. Especially under the dictatorship, many families of Austrians of the heart suffered from persecution and discrimination.
What all Austrians of the heart have in common, however, is not only their origin, but also the special emotional relationship that they have always maintained in their hearts with the homeland of their ancestors. Forced to secrecy by the dictatorship, many have retained their second mother tongue German under great efforts not to be discovered. However, many of them were no longer allowed to visit their former homeland or that of their mother.
The hearts and minds of the Austrian people of Albania bear witness to a history that now seems far away and yet is still so close. They represent a hitherto less known and less researched aspect of Austrian-Albanian relations, so this volume is intended to provide an initial impetus for further study of this group of people. It is, however, a volume that is not only intended to serve the historical recording and documentation of the life story, but is also primarily intended as a homage to the Austrians of the heart".
